Training

Dr. Sulzer completed medical and graduate school at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. He continued his training at LSU to complete his residency in General Surgery. Following General Surgery training, Dr. Sulzer completed a specialty fellowship in Hepatobiliary Surgery (liver, pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder) at Carolinas Medical Center where he completed nearly 1,000 speciality cases with world leaders in the field. In particular, Dr. Sulzer had the opportunity to to train with renowned experts in the fields of robotic surgery and advanced energy surgery (ablation technology).
Current Practice
Dr. Sulzer came to Mission Hospital in 2020 where he currently practices with Mission Surgery. His practice focuses on complex general surgery as well as treatment for cancers of the pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder and liver. Since arriving, Dr. Sulzer has performed the majority of major liver surgeries and roughly half of all pancreas cases completed at Mission Hospital. In addition, Dr. Sulzer is the only provider in Western North Carolina to offer the Whipple procedure and major liver resections robotically.

His training and experience in complex robotic HPB surgery affords Dr. Sulzer the opportunity to teach other surgeons and trainees in these techniques. Dr. Sulzer serves as a proctor for Intuitive, traveling to teach at institutions throughout the country and having surgeons come to observe surgeries at Mission Hospital. He has also been an invited speaker and teacher at numerous academic and industry courses where he gets to share his knowledge and techniques with colleagues and the next generation of surgeons.

Dr. Sulzer’s experience has also led to him holding administrative roles including the Service Line Leader for Surgical Services, Medical Director at Mission Cancer Specialists, and physician leader of the busiest robotics program in both North and South Carolina.
